OCTOBER 31st - HAPPY HALLOWEEN

The Friday Mixed crew took to the ice for many heated contests on Oct 31st. The Marcel Chacun crew provided potato and hamburger soup for lunch and we were all very appreciative. You will see a few shots of the group on and off the ice and also Marcel Chacun and Debbie McLellan, washing dishes after lunch.

Jim Lyons, the coordinator for all the Senior leagues can be seen with our Ice Maker, Geordie Barkley, taking copies of the Friday Mixed schedule.

Happy Halloween,

The first week of curling is almost complete and it has gone very well. Senior men kicked it off on Tuesday morning, followed by the Afternoon Ladies league, and the Evening Ladies.

On Wednesday, our club hosted the Trilight Girls League and then we saw the High School kids out for a pratice before their league starts.

Today the Friday Mixed league will see their first action.

Last night the Curling Club held a small, but very productive Annual Meeting and Executive Meeting.

The pictures show the Trilight League and the kids practicing.

WESTMAN SUPER LEAGUE

It was billed as a grudge match, on Wednesday night in the Westman Super League. Graham Freeman, along with Kevin and Dwayne Barkley and Kevin Cooley took on Allan Lyburn's foursome, including Cory Barkley, Scott Ramsay and Mark Taylor. When the dust cleared it was Cory Barkley with bragging rights on this night. Also in action, was Kelly Skinner's team, with Darcy Hayward, Allan Lawn and Trevor Taylor who also marked up a victory.

ONE WEEK TO THE START OF THE 2008 / 09 SEASON

Things are definitely progressing very well at the Virden Curling Club. Geordie and Ethel spent the day touching up and finalizing the painting job and then they were joined by Cory Barkley, Kevin Barkley, Claude Karwandy and Doug McLellan to add end lines, t-Lines, the centre lines, four foot lines and some of the rope bumpers. It is now really taking the form of a first rate curling club.

Karla Gardiner and Darla Hayward are busy stocking their bar and eagerly looking forward to seeing everyone return for a brand new season.

Hello, Welcome Back, and Thank You

Hi everyone. Just wanted to greet all to our new Virden Curling Club Blog site, and welcome your comments, questions, and ideas.

We wanted to personally thank our rink staff, new and old, who have been very busy preparing for the upcoming season. Our ice staff (old), George Barkley, Ethel Karwandy, and Kevin Barkley, have been very busy with putting the surface together that we've all come to expect. We must also thank Barry Hayward and Bill Barkley who yearly have helped with the whitening of the ice and did so again this year. Thanks guys.

We are very fortunate to have hired some familiar faces to our off ice staff this season. Doug and Debbie McLellan will be in charge of the canteen and day to day management of the VCC, while Darla Hayward and Karla Gardiner will manage the bar operation. They have all been busy "learning the ropes", and we feel very confident that they will all do a wonderful job.

Special thanks to Doug for taking his own time to put this blog together and give you an inside look at the day to day work. Doug also requires thanks for his work on the ice with George and his staff as he gets broke in as an "icemaker", pretty good from what I've seen!

Also congrats to Virden's Darcy Hayward for winning the King Spud Mens Cash Bonspiel in Carberry on the weekend with the Kelly Skinner rink of Hamiota. They defeated Ian Beavis of Morden in the final and took home $3100. Virden's Graham Freeman and rink of Kevin Cooley, Kevin Barkley, and Dwayne Barkley also did well with a semi-finalist finish and pocketing $1250. Well done everyone!

On behalf of the VCC executive, we hope you enjoy the 2008/09 season and look forward to seeing you on and off the ice!

There is openings on our VCC executive for this season, anyone interested please let me know. Thank you, VCC President 2008/2009 Cory Barkley

Their first loss was to Wade Whyte of Edm. who qualified out of the A event. The other two games were hard fought 5 - 4 losses. Watch for more Bonspiel updates as the season progresses.

PAINTING THE ICE WHITE

Getting curling ice ready for use by the Members of the Virden Curling Club is a very interesting process. This is Geordie Barkley's 15th year and he makes it look easy. On Thursday, Oct 16th he got together a small crew to paint the ice white and now it looks like a curling rink. Bill Barkley, Barry Hayward, Ethel Karwandy, Cory Barkley, Doug McLellan and of course Geordie Barkley, worked for about 3 hours to paint the ice white.

Bill and Barry took bags of dry ice whitener and mixed it to feed it to a very neat spraying system, managed by Geordie. It took about 5 coats to get the colour to the desired thickness, and then 4 more light coats of finely misted water to seal the deal.

This weekend rings, hoglines, etc will be applied as we approach the first day of curling on Tuesday, Oct 28th. More reports to come.

Cory Barkley and his team are headed tonight for a cash spiel in Medicine Hat and we wish him all the best.

DAY 9 OF FLOODING - VIRDEN CURLING CLUB

Geordie and Ethel have now put more than 5,000 gallons of special water donated to the club by the ERCO Worldwide plant, situated just west of Virden. Tomorrow will be a big day, as they have assembled a small crew to assist in whitening the ice. There were a few problems with a compressor early in the process, but things now have been running very well.

The first curling day, October 28th, is quickly approaching and we are getting excited about the start of a new season. Watch for more posts soon.
