PAINTING THE ICE WHITE

Getting curling ice ready for use by the Members of the Virden Curling Club is a very interesting process. This is Geordie Barkley's 15th year and he makes it look easy. On Thursday, Oct 16th he got together a small crew to paint the ice white and now it looks like a curling rink. Bill Barkley, Barry Hayward, Ethel Karwandy, Cory Barkley, Doug McLellan and of course Geordie Barkley, worked for about 3 hours to paint the ice white.

Bill and Barry took bags of dry ice whitener and mixed it to feed it to a very neat spraying system, managed by Geordie. It took about 5 coats to get the colour to the desired thickness, and then 4 more light coats of finely misted water to seal the deal.

This weekend rings, hoglines, etc will be applied as we approach the first day of curling on Tuesday, Oct 28th. More reports to come.

Cory Barkley and his team are headed tonight for a cash spiel in Medicine Hat and we wish him all the best.
